Titusville and the Birthplace of Oil

A history lover's guide to Titusville, where the modern oil industry was born in 1859.

In 1859, Edwin Drake drilled the first commercially successful oil well in the United States along the banks of Oil Creek near Titusville, and the world was never the same. Today the area preserves that world-changing moment with a museum, a state park, and a rail-trail that traces the old oil boom. Here is how to explore the birthplace of an industry.

The Drake Well

The story begins at the Drake Well, a 69.5-foot-deep well in Cherrytree Township whose success in August 1859 sparked the first oil boom in the United States. The well was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It is widely considered the birthplace of the modern oil industry.

The Drake Well Museum

The well sits at the heart of the Drake Well Museum, located about three miles south of Titusville on Drake Well Road between Routes 8 and 27. The site features a reconstruction of Drake's well and working oil field equipment, plus indoor and outdoor exhibits, a library of over 2,500 titles, and a photographic collection with more than 10,800 images. It is essential for anyone curious about how the industry began.

A City Born of the Boom

The discovery transformed Titusville almost overnight, growing the town from about 250 residents to 10,000 and leading to its incorporation as a city in 1866. Walking the streets today, you can still feel the scale of the boom that reshaped the region. It is a remarkable example of how a single well changed an entire community.

Oil Creek State Park

Just outside town, Oil Creek State Park protects the valley where the world's first commercial oil well was drilled. Its 9.7-mile asphalt bike trail follows a historic railroad grade along Oil Creek, connecting Petroleum Centre in the south to the Drake Well Museum in the north. Petroleum Centre offers a visitor center, bike rentals, a picnic area, and a playground, making it a great base for exploring.
